An Al-12Si/ZnS powder inoculant for eutectic silicon in Al-12Si alloy

To obtain high-performance Al-Si-based cast alloys, refinement and modification of Si phases are required. An Al-12Si/ZnS powder inoculant was designed fabricated using a chemical bath deposition method. The efficiency the for modifying eutectic phase in as-cast Al-12Si alloy studied. Results show that can significantly refine Al-Si alloys. best effect is achieved with 17.5wt.% powder. Coarse long needle-shaped length 18 µm modified into approximately spherical shape diameter 6.53 µm, which evenly distributed throughout alloy. E2EM model calculation indicates inter-plane misfit (Fp) inter-atomic spacing (Fr) between ZnS all less than 0.5%, confirms potential nucleation site phase. hardness, tensile strength, elongation alloys 17.5% increase 6.30%, 16.18% 55.45%, respectively, compared to unmodified fracture behavior dominated by transgranular supplemented intergranular fracture.
